Bearings: The Best Part About Being Human
By Jonah Padula
It is very rare to listen to an album for the first time and be immediately encapsulated by the energy that it is emanating. Thankfully, The Best Part About Being Human is among those lucky few that manages to draw you in from its first song through its last.
The junior record by the Ottowa based 5-piece feels like a combination of some of the best pop-punk bands we’ve heard in the last decade, but manages to do it in a way that still sounds incredibly unique and interesting. From the opening track “Scenery” we get a catchy (although incredible cheesy) love song that drives us forward through the rest of the 28 minute record. The energy is then propelled forward by arguably the best 3 songs on the record, back to back; “Gone So Gone”, “Go Long”, and “Ocean Dream”. Together, these 3 felt like the perfect songs to drive too with the windows rolled down and your friends in the car. The album finishes with “Human”, an emotional yet somewhat uplifting song that, in the world of social media is almost necessary to hear.
After listening to The Best Part About Being Human, it is clear that Bearings deserve to be among the new up and coming bands that social media (specifically Tik Tok) has made so popular these last few years. While the album does appear cheesy in parts with its lyric writing, the songs themselves are still incredibly captivating. These songs are made to be sung live, and it is clear that in a few years, everyone in the audience will know the lyrics too.
